Marshmallow
"Live in New York once, but leave before it makes you hard.
Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft."
I'd say I've got about 7 months before I'm a just marshmallow on random appendages. Is it because it is so liberal and tolerant here that if you live here for too long, you might begin to think that the rest of the world might be like here too? And vice versa for NY?
I'm not really sure, but I think Baz Luhrman is probably referring specifically to me, when the other day, I bought a pack of Mexican marshmallows at the Korean fruit and vegetable stand. It was a huge bag of puffy pink and white marshmallows that, according to the bag, were full of sabor. So I bought the bag thinking I would only eat one or two at a time. Well it started out that way, but a few days in, I found myself eating the entire rest of the bag in one sitting because every time I ate a pink marshmallow, I had to eat a white marshmallow, and every time I ate a white marshmallow, I had to balance that out with eating a pink one. And thus the bloated cycle continued until the whole bag was gone and I had eaten the equivalent of a wheelbarrow full of horse hooves.
So when the Sunscreen song references Northern California softness, I think it just means, balance your diet with protein and vegetables, so you won't become what you eat, soft y sabor.
