Spielberg Polemic

Blogging while the TV is on is fun because you can pretend you are having a conversation with another person. This fact could launch a whole conversation on the unfortunate reality of single life. But anyway, my throw away comments don't have to actually be thrown away when I can write them down for you to read! For example, there is a show on right now that is skimming over top movies.

In making "Saving Private Ryan", Steven Spielberg says, "I wanted to immerse the audience in a war-film that showed the horror of war."

Mr. Spielberg sir, your films are a horror unto themselves. No need to delve into the actual subject material.

Does Spielberg really deserve the attention he deserves? I'm about as qualified to speak to film studies as Oprah is to speak to ...well, anything, but I don't know why he gets so much acclaim over other directors. Sure, his creativity in creating a suspenseful monster while hardly showing the shark in "Jaws" was impressive, and he birthed the modern summer blockbuster (which is maybe not admirable), but what does he do as a director that is so impressive? Ok ok, I haven't seen "Schlinder's List", but as much as I love the Indiana Jones trilogy, I don't know what justifies his fame. Jurassic Park 2 sucked. A.I. sucked. War of the Worlds sucked. Indiana Jones 4 probably sucks. Jurassic Park was good. Maybe he just bats 50/50 with monster movies.
